Honor Our Military at upcoming events downtown!
In more ways than one, we often look to our friends at Fort Bragg with admiration. They are a part of our community as our friends, our neighbors and our family. To show support, honor sacrifice and to celebrate our freedom, there many events coming up this spring and summer that will not want to be missed:

The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra free performance to remember the service of our armed forces featuring a piece titled “Quiet Heroes” in remembrance of the flag raisers of Iwo Jima. The composer, Chris Brubeck, will be present and the piece will be narrated live by Wilford Brimley. The Army Ground Forces Band will perform with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra for a variety of patriotic selections. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets required. - Memorial Day Ceremony

The Memorial Day Ceremony honors those that have paid the supreme sacrifice and the families who lost loved ones. Bleacher seating is limited. - 6th Annual ASOMF Run for the Legend 5K/10K
Saturday, June 1, Airborne and Special Operations Museum, 8 a.m.
All donations and proceeds from the event support the museum's operational and educational programs and activities. The North Carolina Symphony will perform a good, old-fashioned salute to the red, white and blue. Hear patriotic favorites and high-spirited classics as USA is honored on its birthday. This concert is free and open to the public. No tickets required. - July 4th Concert and Fireworks
Thursday, July 4, Festival Park, 3 to 10 p.m.
Celebrate the 4th of July downtown with live music, children’s activities and a fantastic fireworks extravaganza. Festivities are free to the public.
Also, coming up later this summer is the return of the Salute our Troops Family Fun Night on Friday, August 22 sponsored by Kangaroo Express and the annual National Airborne Day on Saturday, August 23 at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum.
While at these fantastic events, do not forget to tour some of our other permanent features downtown honoring the military including the world-class North Carolina Veterans Park and the Airborne and Special Operations Museum. When you are through and your tummy is rumbling, try one of our scrumptious patio restaurants downtown. We have quite a few restaurants and shops that are owned and operated by retired or active duty soldiers or their spouses and many offer military discounts with your military ID. Parking Deck Wins International Award
The Franklin Street Parking Deck has been recognized by the International Parking Institute (IPI) with the Award for Architectural Achievement, which is IPI’s highest award of excellence. The award will be presented Tuesday, May 21 at the IPI Conference & Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The parking deck opened last year and is attached to the Robert C. Williams Business Center. Designed with the public’s safety in mind, the parking deck is equipped with many safety features, including lighting that is 2.5 times brighter than state standards; the first floor of the deck, in fact, has 19-foot ceilings that allow for a more open and even distribution of lighting. There are security cameras inside and outside of the facility, a glass elevator and stairwell and emergency call boxes on each level that are directly linked to 911 police dispatchers. All of the special safety considerations were included in the design, specifically toward creating a user-friendly, highly visible facility. It was built with a 75-year service life, using poured-in-place construction (versus pre-cast), minimizing annual maintenance costs.
The structure includes several other purposeful and thoughtful aesthetic features, such as a brick façade that is similar to other downtown buildings.
The parking deck has nearly 300 spaces and is within walking distance from numerous downtown restaurants and shops; it has been a welcome addition during the Dogwood Festival in April and the International Folk Festival in September, both of which are Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 events.

Nominations Being Accepted for Appearance Awards
The City-County Joint Appearance Commission is accepting nominations for the Community Appearance Awards Program, which recognizes properties in Fayetteville and Cumberland County that are improving the appearance of the community. The City-County Joint Appearance Commission is made up of members from Cumberland County and the nine municipalities in Cumberland County, including Fayetteville.
Nominations must be submitted by June 1. The commission will review all nominations and select award recipients, who will be honored at a summer awards ceremony.
Nominations are invited in the following award categories: Best existing single-family residential property, best new single-family residential property, best existing multi-family residential property, best new multi-family residential property, best existing non-residential property, best new non-residential property, best revitalization of a residential property, best revitalization of a non-residential property, best housing development or neighborhood, best landscaping project, best green project, best restoration of a historical property and best neighborhood entrance/gateway.
To obtain a nomination form, call the City Planning Department at (910) 433-1612 and request that a form be mailed to you or go to www.cityoffayetteville.org, click Appearance Awards at the top of the page and print the form. The website form is another option to submit a nomination.
Renaissance Plan Update - City Council 05/06
One of the final stages in the adoption process, Studio Cascade is returning tonight to present the draft Downtown Renaissance Plan update to City Council, which was approved by the Fayetteville Planning Commission in April. Community outreach efforts since September 2012 have included stakeholder interviews, a week-long “storefront studio,” online surveys and social media, marketing/advertising in print and broadcast media, presentations and workshops with the Fayetteville Planning Commission and multiple public workshops.

The process to update the Renaissance Plan began in 2012 in order to establish new goals and action items for the next 10 to 20 years.
The downtown planning area extends approximately one mile in all directions from the Market House, encompassing 3,000 acres. Fayetteville State University is also within the planning area, as is a portion of the Cape Fear River, representing two very important components of the emerging downtown strategy.

Treat Mom to a fabulous carriage ride this Mother's Day weekend!
On Saturday, May 11 during Mother’s Day weekend, a horse-drawn carriage will be available to take moms and their children on a 20 minute ride through the historic district. Rides start at 1 p.m. and continue every 20 minutes until 8 p.m. departing from the Downtown Alliance office at 222 Hay Street. Tickets are $15 per adult and $5 for children under 12 when accompanied by an adult or reserve a private coach for 2 for $50. To purchase your tickets before May 11, go by City Center Gallery & Books at 112 Hay Street between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily or call 910-678-8899 to charge it by phone. The rain date is Sunday, May 12. If the rides are postponed to Sunday, there will be an announcement on the bookstore answering machine by 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. You may purchase your tickets at 222 Hay Street on the day of the event; however, make sure to make a reservation soon before they sell out (and they always do)!

Pamper and Celebrate Mom on Mother’s Day Weekend!
We should thank our mothers often for the love she gives, but for the cooking, cleaning, toting around, driving around and more, she definitely deserves a special day and this year, downtown has a few special things to help you. Fayetteville Beautiful Annual Litter Pick-Up!
Get ready to beautify Fayetteville on Saturday, Apr. 20 for Fayetteville Beautiful's Annual Litter Pickup! Register on their new website www.fayettevillebeautiful.com and pinpoint a space on the map where and your friends will be helping (or find a place to help)! The rally location is at MLK entrance on Ramsey Street at 9 a.m. Mayor Tony Chavonne, City Manager Ted Voorhees and Police Chief Harold Medlock among other dignitaries will be in attendance and t-shirts will be handed out as they last! Orange trash bags, gloves and bottled water will be available.
Fayetteville Beautiful is a grass-roots organization whose mission is to encourage our citizens to create and maintain a cleaner and more beautiful Fayetteville. Fayetteville Beautiful is a committee of concerned citizens dedicated to encourage others to take greater responsibility for improving their environment. The key to a long term sustainable solution for a more beautiful Fayetteville is its success at changing individual behavior and attitudes about litter.
