Downtown Safety & Engagement Ambassador (Full-Time)

The role of the Safety & Engagement Ambassador (SEA) requires a unique combination of skills. Ambassadors must demonstrate strong verbal communication, de-escalation and conflict resolution skills, a caring and compassionate approach to their work, and a customer service focus.

During a shift, Cool Spring Ambassadors will engage with a wide range of situations, to include providing support for individuals experiencing homelessness or mental health issues, educating people regarding local ordinances, interacting with business owners and residents, and assisting downtown visitors who need directions or suggestions.

To succeed in this role, a candidate must possess the resiliency to maintain a calm and professional demeanor through the highs and lows of the day. This may be the most challenging and rewarding job you will ever love.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patrol the designated zone of the downtown core and provide a variety of support services to members of the public by creating a positive experience for all.
  • Build relationships with people experiencing homelessness to check on their well-being and assist in connecting them with services. Report unwanted behaviors to police for response.
  • Build relationships with downtown businesses, residents, and property owners to share information and assist with problem-solving.
  • Provide directions, maps, handouts and information to tourists, visitors, residents, and local businesses.
  • Manage the cleanliness of sidewalks, alleys, and other public spaces.  Debris will be removed from sidewalks, alleys and street gutters. Debris includes loose trash, cigarette butts, sediment and loose rock. Ambassadors will assist in maintaining a clean downtown by removing litter using manual cleaning methods.
  • Sanitation Management as a part of the Clean Streets shared waste management program: Refresh Clean Streets commercial dumpster pads. Report and catalog illegal dumping.
  • Graffiti management: Document and make first attempt to remove graffiti from buildings, public fixtures, utility boxes and signs. Report to Fay Fix It, as needed.
  • While on normal cleaning rounds, Ambassadors will be trained to tend to nearly every detail they might encounter in the public right of way to include but not limited to: Damp wipe public fixtures, such as trashcans and benches to create a clean appearance.
  • Special projects will be initiated to tackle issues that are overlooked or items that can leave a lasting impression on stakeholders in the Downtown. Special project opportunities include: Painting of street fixtures to include utility boxes, benches, light poles, etc. Cleaning of tree wells and mulching, installation of banners, special event support, etc.
  • Act as a safety escort.  Ambassadors can meet downtown employees or visitors at their location and escort them to their destination within the district.
  • Work on special assignments both as individuals and as part of a team and use courtesy, tact, and good judgement in working with members of the public.
  • Collect data and track daily work activities and submit weekly report to supervisor. 
  • Other duties: All CSDD staff attend and assist with all CSDD events, including setup/breakdown, vendor and volunteer management, hospitality needs, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Customer service-oriented mindset with the ability to critically and creatively problem solve, exercise judgement, and make sound decisions. Level-headed demeanor and a demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure in an often fast-paced and changing environment, while managing interactions with individuals from all walks of life. 
  • Knowledge of (and willingness to learn) how to interact with people affected by mental health and substance abuse issues. De-escalation skills are highly desired.
  • Time management skills and self-discipline to work independently and remain on task without constant supervision.
  • Work is conducted outdoors year-round in downtown Fayetteville, during all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds and be able to read and write in English. Bilingual a plus.

Compensation: Full-time salary is $38,000

Schedule: Flexible schedule – Day shift, Evening shift, Weekends as needed. Weekly SEA schedule determined and assigned by supervisor, based on need.
