Fayetteville, N.C. – Organizers are pleased to announce the full performance schedule for the 2022 Juneteenth Jubilee, held on Saturday, June 18 from 12:00PM – 9:30PM in Festival Park (335 Ray Avenue). In addition to Grammy Award-nominated artists Amythyst Kiah and hometown rapper, Morray, the Jubilee stage will come alive with performances from Diali Cissokho and Kaira Ba, The Fatback Band, and Reggie Codrington. Diali Cissokho follows in the tradition of Senegalese musicians and storytellers known as griots. Together with his band, Kaira Ba – composed of Tarheel natives John Westmoreland, Jonathan Henderson, Austin McCall, and Will Ridenour – Cissokho weaves the traditions and rhythms of West African music with subtle notes of blues and folk sounds from the American South. NPR’s Frank Stasio described their sound as “at once unique and universal.”

Originally founded in 1966 by musician, Bill “Fatback” Curtis, The Fatback Band have been getting audiences on the dance floor for 50 years with their influential upbeat, orchestral soul music.  Disco pioneers with a sound that merged jazz and funky beats with a touch of West Indies & Caribbean style, the Fatback Band has released more than 35 albums of original material infused with every imaginable genre of music, from jazz, funk, R&B, disco, rap, and all eras of soul.

Fayetteville native, Reggie Codrington, has been performing and recording jazz music for over a decade. Throughout his career as a notable soprano saxophone player, Codrington has opened for numerous music legends, including Ramsey Lewis, Frankie Beverly & Maze, and Charlie Wilson. Codrington was even invited to perform at the 2012 Inaugural Ball. A brilliant blend of smooth jazz, old school soul, and elements of contemporary funk, Codrington’s musicianship makes him one of the most masterful and highly requested jazz artists on the scene today.

In addition to the stage performances, attendees will be able to partake of the delicious offerings from over 15 different local food trucks. Artists, artisans, and other local vendors be on hand to entice visitors with wares for every whim. Non-profit organizations, such as The Frederick Douglass Foundation of NC, will be on hand to offer history, information on cultural activities, health resources, and educational interactions for festival-goers of all ages. Families with children can enjoy crafting a Juneteenth art project, led by the Cumberland County Public Library, or get the wiggles out at our unicorn bounce house and ring toss. COOL SPRING DOWNTOWN DISTRICT ANNOUNCES
GRAMMY-NOMINATED ARTIST FOR INAUGURAL JUNETEENTH JUBILEE

On behalf of the City of Fayetteville, Cool Spring Downtown District – in partnership with Juneteenth Freedom Festival (www.juneteenthfreedomfestival.com) is excited to announce Grammy Award – nominated artist, Amythyst Kiah. This Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter was a member of Our Native Daughters—an all-women-of-color supergroup whose standout “Black Myself”, written by Kiah, earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the 2019 Folk Alliance International Awards.

In 2013, Amythyst Kiah self-released her debut album, Dig; she immediate garnered acclaim from leading outlets like NPR and The New York Times, who remarked that Kiah’s “razor-sharp guitar picking alone guarantees her a place among blues masters, but it’s her deep-hued voice that can change on a dime from brushed steel to melted toffee that commands attention.” Kiah’s Rounder Records debut album Wary + Strange offers a deeply immersive body of work, endlessly redefining the limits of roots music in its inventive rhythms and textures.  “A lot of these songs come from a moment in my 20s when I was grappling with trauma while also trying to navigate the experience of being a Black and LGBT woman in a white suburban area in a Bible Belt town,” says Kiah.

Kiah will be a part of a main stage lineup that includes fellow Grammy Award nominee, Morray; West African funk and jazz band, Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba; funk and disco group, The Fatback Band; and renowned jazz saxophonist, Reggie Codrington. The Juneteenth Jubilee will be held on Saturday, June 18 2022 from 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM. The festival will be followed by a ticketed Jubilee Heritage Brunch on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at Studio 215 from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Tickets are on sale now.

Fayetteville, N.C. – Cool Spring Downtown District (CSDD), Circa 1865, and Cumulus Media have partnered to organize and curate the inaugural Juneteenth Jubilee and Praise Party in the Park – A Juneteenth Celebration, on behalf of the City of Fayetteville.

The Juneteenth Jubilee will kick off in the heart of downtown on Sat., June 18, 2022, with a full-day street festival featuring multiple nationally touring headliners, local musical acts, other performances, food trucks, small-business and corporate vendors, artists and artisans, and more.

CSDD and Circa 1865 will host the Juneteenth Jubilee Heritage Brunch, a ticketed event, on Sun., June 19, 2022. The event will showcase Black chefs and culinary students serving a brunch menu that features heritage-worthy, southern Black cuisine while light entertainment plays in the background.

The featured keynote speaker at the brunch is Jaki Shelton Green, North Carolina’s ninth Poet Laureate. Green is known to be the first Black Poet Laureate in the state and the third woman to ever hold the role.

While the nationally touring headliners for the street festival will be announced later this month, CSDD’s Director of Special Projects, Ashanti Bennett, describes the uniqueness of this event: “From the beginning, we at Cool Spring have been focused on creating a joyful, respectful, and inclusive celebration to uplift this most American of holidays.”

Elaborating on the significance of this holiday, Bennett shares, “The imperative to honor the story of endurance and resilience of Black Americans, from Emancipation to Reclamation, is clear. We aspire to do so by focusing on the joy of Black culture and sharing that with our entire community in jubilee fashion. It is an honor to be able to play a role in preserving and advancing Juneteenth traditions, new and old, for our city.”

This will be the fourth year the Juneteenth Freedom Festival has been held in Cumberland County, and this year’s festival will take place over the course of four days at multiple venues around the county, including the Town of Spring Lake. Learn more about all the festivities here.

One of Circa 1865’s board members, Tyrrel Walker, serves as the executive coordinator of the Juneteenth Freedom Festival, and along with other Circa board members, he has been assisting Cool Spring in planning and curating downtown’s own two-day event.

“Along with Cool Spring Downtown District, Circa 1865 has worked long and hard to put together a historic celebration that our community can be proud of,” Walker shares. “Expect a bunch of family fun, laughter, friendship, great music, good times, and an amazing opportunity to create some memories while we celebrate freedom as a unified community.”

Immediately following the Juneteenth Heritage Brunch, Magic 106.9 Radio Station and the City of Fayetteville kick off Praise Party in the Park – A Juneteenth Celebration on June 19, 2022, at Festival Park from 12 pm to 6 pm as the final event of the countywide Juneteenth Freedom Festival. Praise Party, a free event, will be hosted by Magic 106.9’s Alysse Stewart, with headliner, three-time Grammy-award winner gospel singer Donnie McClurkin ending the evening.
